Arlene C. George, age 80, of Coon Rapids passed away on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held on 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Friends may call at the Johnson and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Tyler Schwaller. Casket bearers will be Shawn McCurdy, Steven McCurdy Jr., Nicholas Warnke, Kristopher George, Nathan McAlister, Adam Hockett, and Michael Bailey. Burial will be in the Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids. Arlene C. (Johnston) George was born September 8, 1934 in Carroll County to Joseph & Viva (Goodwin) Johnston. She attended rural school at Union #6 then graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1952. On September 8, 1954 Arlene was united in marriage to Wade N. George at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home northeast of Coon Rapids , eventually settling on the George family farm in 1975. To this union was born five children: Fred, Joyce, Mary, Dan & William. Arlene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. She belonged to many organizations such as the Rebekah Lodge, H&H, United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary, Garden Club, Past Noble Grands, Card Club, Square Dance Club, was a 4-H Leader, and was a Boy & Girl Scout Leader. Later in life, she was the owner of Arlene’s Cafe for 10 ½ years. Arlene was known for being a very good cook (especially for her pies), and willing to help anyone out. She volunteered at New Hope Village Shop after retiring from the café in 1995. She is survived by children Fred George (Carolyn) of Phoenix, AZ , Joyce McCurdy (Steven) of Coon Rapids, Mary Warnke (Robert) of Scranton, Dan George of Coon Rapids and William George of Coon Rapids. There are seven grandchildren, Jennifer Bailey (Michael), Shawn McCurdy, Steven McCurdy Jr. (Jaci), Alisha McAlister (Nathan), Bobbi Jo Hockett (Adam), Nicholas Warnke (Haley), Kristopher George (April), seventeen great grandchildren, a sister Bethel Carpenter (Duane) of Coon Rapids, brother-in-law Bryan Emery (JoAnn) of Johnston, brother-in-law John George (Marcella) of Nevada, sister-in-law Darlene George of Coon Rapids, an aunt LaVon Smouse, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Wade N. George, her parents Joe and Viva Johnston, a sister Etta Emery, a sister-in-law Lorene G. Schumacher and a brother-in-law Dale George.
