Zenas “Zenie” Becker, age 71, of Maple River, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by the parish. Lector for the Mass will be Lynn Ernst, gift bearers will be grandchildren: JoLee and Tyler Becker. Eucharistic ministers will be Allen and Gary Becker. Burial will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Maple River with military honors by the Breda American Legion. Casket bearers will be Lynn Wuebker, Gary Beyerink, Joe Thielen, Melvin Nieland, Cliff Neumeyer, and Roger Kanne. Honorary casket bearer will be Dan Hermsen.
Born on March 25, 1939 at Carroll, Iowa, he was the son of William and Amelia (Reising) Becker. He grew up in Breda and his family moved to Thayer his freshman year in high school where he graduated from high school in 1957. Following high school he worked at Paul and Wayne’s in Carroll until he entered the United States Army in 1962 and served two years. He then returned to Carroll and worked for Paul and Wayne’s for several years and then for Community Oil for 28 years retiring in 2007. He was married to Loa Hall on July 7, 1962 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll by Fr. Peter Fransco. The couple raised their family in Carroll and moved to Maple River in 1992. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel. He was very active in the Jaycees in his younger years and he was a member of the Breda American Legion. Zenie enjoyed playing cards at Little Gus’ every day and spending time with his grandchildren, his family, and his many good friends.
Surviving are his wife Loa of Maple River; a son Tony Becker, his wife Leslie, and their son Aiden of Carlisle; and a son Terry Becker, his wife Cindy, and their children JoLee and Tyler of Cedar Rapids; seven brothers: Art Becker and his wife Dorothy of Charter Oak, Bill Becker and his wife Mary Lou of Carroll, John Becker and his wife Marna of Afton, Jerry Becker of Glidden, Allen Becker of Perry, Gary Becker and his wife Maureen of Perry, and Gene Becker and his wife Kay of Pomeroy; two sisters: Clarita Roth of Spencer, and Phyllis Danner and her husband Verlin of Glidden; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Helen Wolterman and Jovina Becker, and two brothers Robert and Mike Becker.
