Wilma Tranter

Wilma Doris Tranter, age 90, of Carroll passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Rod Roberts officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 A.M. on Monday morning until the time of service. Music for the service will be by Trish Roberts. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Born on March 10, 1924 at Nodaway, Iowa, she was the daughter of Charles R. and D. Vivian (Carothers) Kernen. Wilma attended Nodaway Consolidated School through the tenth grade and in 1939 her family moved to a farm north of Ralston. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1941 and then attended AIB in Des Moines. She was then employed by the Farmers Elevator Service Company in Ralston. Wilma was married to Kenneth H. Tranter on February 25, 1944. The couple lived in Panama City, Florida while Ken served in the United States Army Air Force. Ken and Wilma lived in several locations with his military career before moving to Carroll in 1946. Wilma worked for the Pioneer Theatre Corporation district office in Carroll as a secretary to Don Smith from 1946 – 1951. Ken and Wilma moved to Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas in 1951 when Ken was recalled to active service in the Korean War. Wilma worked at the Air Force Specialized Supply Depot in Topeka for 22 months as secretary to the Transportation Officer while Ken was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. Ken and Wilma lived in California from December of 1952 until her husband retired from Shell Oil Company in 1982. While living in California, Wilma worked at various jobs and retired from the California Department of Education after a 22 year career. Ken and Wilma lived in several locations in California and Nevada before returning to Carroll in 2001. Wilma is survived by her husband Kenneth Tranter of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Randolph F. Kernen, Clyde E. Kernen, and Lysle W. Kernen.
