William "Bill" Schon

William “Bill” Schon, age 95, of Glidden passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Andrew Hoffman and Fr. Randy Schon concelebrating assisted by Deacon Gary Schon. Mass server will be Talia Schon. Lectors for the Mass will be Carla Knutsen and Jen Schon. Music for the Mass will be by the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir with Marcy Anderson as organist. Gift bearers will be Brittany Becker, Hallie Golay, Avery Knutsen, Caleb Knutsen, Austen Eich, and Lyla Eich. Casket bearers will be Chad Eich, Nick Schon, Matt Schon, Steve Schon, and Traer Schon. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Friends may call at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden after 4:00 P. M. on Monday where there will be a Rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. Visitation will resume at the church at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Carroll Relay for Life or the Glidden Fire Department and may be left at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for Bill’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on June 9, 1921 on his family’s farm near Willey, he was the son of William Sr. and Anna (Mersman) Schon. He grew up on the farm and attended St. Mary’s School in Willey. Following his schooling, he worked for his Dad on the farm. He was drafted into the US Army and began basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, just as WWII ended, and Bill was discharged and did not have to serve. He was married to Dorothy Klocke on January 9, 1945 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dedham. The couple farmed two miles south of Glidden where they raised their family. Farming was Bill’s life and he served for many years on the board of the Farmer’s Coop in Glidden. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden and was instrumental in establishing the Parish and served on the original building committee of the church. Bill enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, polka dancing, and spending time with his family. He was an avid baseball fan and an excellent player in his youth earning the nickname “Wink” for his quickness. Bill is survived by his wife Dorothy M. Schon of Glidden; a daughter Darlene Eich (Jim) of Carroll; three sons: Don Schon (Paula), Jim Schon (Chris) and Kevin Schon (Renee) all of Glidden; ten grandchildren: Chad Eich (April), Carla Knutsen (Mike), Nick Schon, Matt Schon, Jen Schon, Steve Schon (Bridget), Brittany Becker (David), Hallie Golay (Andy), Traer Schon, and Talia Schon; seven great-grandchildren: Avery, Caleb, Austen, Lyla, Jett, Madi, and Bryce; a brother Leo Schon, of Carroll; sisters-in-law: Harriet Schon of Carroll, Barb Schon of DesMoines, Dorothy S. Schon of Glidden, Louise Klocke of Carroll, Annabelle Fox of Carroll, and Lavina Keiser of Illinois; brother-in-law: Ronald Klocke (Linda) of Mankato, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and six brothers: Andrew, Norbert, Joe, Louis, Robert, and Sil, and a son Ronald in infancy.
