William A. Schaefer, age 79, of Carroll died at the St. Anthony Regional Hospital on August 6, 2011.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev.B.J. Ukena officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Ellen Severin and Soloist will be Skip Raridon singing “Abide with Me” and “Amazing Grace”. Casket Bearers will be Norm Hutcheson, Tom Rogers, Don Prior, Bob Olesen, Dick Fulton, and Larry Leib. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with Military Honors by the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Masonic Memorial service at 7:00 P.M. for family and friends. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the service.
Born on December 10, 1931 at Carroll he was the son of William and Winifred (Billick) Schaefer. He attended Carroll Public Schools and graduated from Carroll High School in 1950 and then attended Iowa Teachers College before entering the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. He was married to Carlene Kanne on Jan 25, 1958 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale. Before retiring he had worked as an Insurance Investigator for Equifax Company for 30 years. Bill as he was known to most was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carroll, a 50 year member of Signet Masonic Lodge # 264 A. F and A.M., a 50 year member of the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion, the Carroll Moose Lodge, the RPM Club, the Studebaker Club, and the NRA. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and he was an avid hunter, restored cars and rode motorcycles.
Surviving are a daughter Patty Meyers and her husband Dick of Carroll, Iowa; a son Mike Schaefer and his wife Traci of Clive, Iowa; five grandchildren: Andy, Paige, and Haley DenAdel, and Lindsey and Ben Schaefer; his God Daughter Piper Kanne of Carroll, Iowa; a brother Ralph “Herb” Schaefer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and a special friend Mary Ann Boeckman of Carroll, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1999, two sisters: Donna King and Linda O’Brien, an infant granddaughter Sarah DenAdel in 1988; and a son-in-law Tom DenAdel in 2004.
