William “Bill” Raymond Kanne, age 71, of Carroll, a loving husband, father and grandfather was welcomed into open arms of his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer. He passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Craig Collison as Celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be Joyce Carter and Bev Finley. Gift Bearers will be Jeff Sanders, Susan Kopaska, and Deb Hannasch. Mass Server will be Grant Sanders. Eucharistic Minister will be Jane Soyer, Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Casket bearers: James Schoenherr, Ronald Meiners, Dean Boell, Gale Vinke, Dean Klocke, Donald Kramer, Glenn Soyer and Kenneth Sanders. Honorary casket bearers sons: Tracy Kanne, Clint Kanne, Curt Kanne and Son in Laws: Joe Bednarczyk, Corey Phipps, Lance Petree, Gary Grant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Friday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:00 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on August 6, 1945 in Carroll, Iowa, he was the son of William J. and Gertrude (Wieland) Kanne. He attended Holy Family Grade school in Lidderdale, IA and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1963. During high school he enjoyed playing football and was a member of the wrestling team. After graduating, Bill enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he moved back to Iowa where he farmed north of Carroll. On July 13, 1968 he married Mary Kay Kramer at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale, Iowa. They raised their children on the family farm north of Carroll before moving to Carroll in 1987. He enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events: wrestling, track, volleyball, basketball and softball. After his children graduated from high school he enjoyed attending sales and auctions, collecting and restoring classic tractors, collecting antique toy tractors and fire arms. He looked forward to getting away from the cold Iowa winters in Arizona. Bill treasured spending time with is grandchildren, his close friends “the gang“ and his coffee buddies. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7, Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, Iowa Pork Producers, and served as Treasurer of Carroll Farm Bureau Board of Directors for many years. Left to celebrate his life is his wife of 48 years Mary Kay of Carroll; sons: Tracy Kanne of Saint Peters, MO, Clint (Kate) Kanne of Auburn, IA, Curt (Sheila) Kanne of Indianola, IA, daughters: Lisa (Joe) Bednarczyk of Mesa, AZ, Sara (Corey) Phipps of Chrisman, IL, Sonya (Lance) Petree of Cave Spring, AR, and Megan (Gary) Grant of Brownsburg, IN; his grandchildren: Taylor Kanne, Hunter Kanne, Julia Kanne, Albert Kanne, Mallory Kanne, Ethan Kanne, Colby Phipps, Kailey Phipps, Addison Phipps and London Petree; his sister: Janet (Kenneth) Sanders of Carroll, IA; brother-in-law: Donald (Alice) Kramer of Lidderdale, IA; sisters-in-laws: Shirley (Dale) Fogerty of Casa Grande, AZ and Jane (Glenn) Soyer of Norwalk, IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents William J. and Gertrude (Wieland) Kanne, brother Walter Kanne, sisters Trudy Kay Kanne and Marlou Kennedy and an infant grandchild Makayla Phipps, his mother and father-in-law Henry and Theresa (Steinkamp) Kramer, brother-in-law William Kramer and sister-in-law Marilyn Kramer.
