Wilford Milton Hiles “Bill/Willie”, age 80, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at his home in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 18, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia with Pastor Ben Dose officiating. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. on Thursday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. followed by a Moose memorial service. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday to lie in state until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lisa McNelley and the soloist will be Marv Toft. Burial will be at Crawford Heights Memorial Gardens near Denison with military honors by the Denison American Legion. Casket bearers will be Mark Toms, Cory Brincks, Alvin Riesberg, Al Luchtl, Craig Luchtl, Delby Bruhn, and Darren Slechta. Honorary casket bearers will be the employees of Randy’s Diesel Repair, Billy’s five granddaughters: Jamie Feauto, Jenni Middleton, Staci Spittler, Emily Bruhn, and Megan Slechta, and his good friends: Jim Kerper, Don Nepple, Bob Woodhouse, Bill Badding, Jonn Renze, Rick Renze, Doug Renze, and Steve Renze. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on March 18, 1930 at Wessington, South Dakota, he was the son of Milton and Hilda (Galbreath) Hiles. He grew up in Wessington and graduated from high school in 1948. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy (from 1949 – 1957) during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged. He was married to Joan Bates on August 28, 1950 at Pipestone, Minnesota. The couple lived in Guam, and San Diego, California. After he was discharged they moved to Huron, South Dakota and then Denison. Bill was hired as the first federal meat grader at IBP in Denison. He transferred to Plainview, Texas with IBP in 1975. He was divorced and later re-married Madelyn King (now deceased) in May of 1979. In 1983 he was hired by the Wal-Mart Distribution center in Plainview and worked until he moved to Carroll in 1991 where he worked for the Carroll Wal-Mart. He was an assembler there and was affectionately known as “Bicycle Bill.” He retired in 2000 at age 70. He then worked for his daughter and son-in-law Randy and Mary Bruhn at Randy’s Diesel Repair where he continued to work until January 2011. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, the Carroll Moose Lodge in Carroll, the Elk’s Lodge, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Golfing was his passion and he also enjoyed watching bull riding, Nascar, NFL Football, singing country western music. The highlight of his singing career was singing at Tootsies in Nashville on a fun trip with his good friends. He was a wonderful Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Son and a GREAT friend to many. Surviving are his three daughters: Mary Bruhn and her husband Randy of Carroll, Linda Petersen and her husband Rick of Denison, and Joni Slechta and her husband Todd of Denison; seven grandchildren: Jamie Feauto and her husband Joey of Wellington, Colorado, Jenni Middleton and her husband Ryan of Carroll, Staci Spittler and her husband Jamie of Polk City, Iowa, Delby Bruhn of Pomona, California, Emily Bruhn and her special friend Joel Blanchard of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Darren Slechta of Denison, Iowa, Megan Slechta and her fiancé Joshua Yilek of North Liberty, Iowa; seven great grandchildren: Lauryn, Dylan, Ashley, Lynn, Lacey, Vinson, and Quinten; a brother Richard Hiles and his wife Peggy of Huron, South Dakota; a sister Mary Alice Ferguson of Salt Lake City, Utah; and his “Pretty Lady” Nadine Matthews of Huron, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Melburn and Delbert, and a step sister Lorene French.
