Wilbert John Lussman

Wilbert John Lussman, age 95, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Regency Park in Carroll.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Ryan Roehrig officiating.  Organist for the service will be Ed Ludwig and soloist will be Briee Roehrig.  Casket bearers will be Noah Lussman, Ben Lussman, Owen Lussman, Philip Maixner, Stephen Maixner, Scott Volquartsen, Nic Volquartsen, Tony Troutman, Chris Beyerink, and Bill Troutman.  Honorary casket bearers will be Stephanie Lussman, Jodi Vanderheiden, Jamie Beyerink, and Rachel McGinnis.  Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 -7 P.M. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 5 – 7 P.M.  The casket will be moved to St. Paul Lutheran Church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Concordia Seminary.

Wilbert was born on April 26, 1927, near Arcadia, Iowa, and was the son of Fred and Elsie (Hinz) Lussman. He grew up on a farm north of Arcadia when they were still farming with horses and picking corn by hand.  In February of 1946, he was drafted into the United States Army.  After completing his service in March of 1947, he returned home to farm.  He was married to Ruth Schroeder on November 29, 1950 in Arcadia.  They continued to farm north of Arcadia and raised four children, until moving to Carroll in 1973 where he operated the Sears Catalog store through 1982.  In 1983, he started work in the Carroll County Engineer’s office before finally retiring in 2007.  However, Wilbert always believed in working and he continued to visit the engineer’s office to occasionally fill in with a few hours work at the office until entering the nursing home in 2021.  After 42 happy years of marriage, Ruth passed away in 1993.  On January 24, 1997, he married Dorothy (Rowedder) Volquartsen.  They were happily married for 18 years until Dorothy passed away in 2015.  Wilbert always enjoyed sports, especially watching or listening to his St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes.  He started listening to Cardinal baseball as a young boy on KMOX radio on their farm in Arcadia.  Nearly 90 years and 9 more World Series titles later, he was still watching on his 50” TV this past year.  And in all that time, he only had to suffer through one Cubs championship.

Wilbert is survived by his children: Rick Lussman of Fort Dodge, Robert Lussman, and Jeff (Cheryl) Lussman of Muscatine; two step-children, Tom Volquartsen of Council Bluffs and Beth Troutman of Dedham; daughter-in-law, Linda Volquartsen of Carroll; seven grandchildren: Philip (Sondra) Maixner of Nevada, Stephen Maixner of Nevada, Rachel (Jeff) McGinnis of Cedar Rapids, Stephanie Lussman of Iowa City, Noah Lussman of Muscatine, Ben Lussman of Cedar Rapids, and Owen Lussman of Muscatine; six step-grandchildren: Jodi (Marty) Vanderheiden of Carroll, Scott (Amy) Volquartsen of Carroll, Nic (Stephanie) Volquartsen of Carroll, Bill Troutman of Dedham, Tony (Sarah) Troutman of Carroll, Jamie (Chris) Beyerink of Carroll; his sister LaDonna Mohr of Carroll; two sisters-in-law Shirley Wolterman of Mesa, Arizona and Lois Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Ruth Schroeder and Dorothy Rowedder Volquartsen; his daughter, Roxanne Henry; a grandson, Matthew Maixner; a son-in-law, Mike Troutman; a step-granddaughter, Holly Kanne, and three sisters; Zelda Anderson, Hilma Onken, and Caroline Bowman.
