Wayne L. Daniels, age 95, of Spirit Lake and formerly of Carroll passed away at Lakes Regional Health Care on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Tuesday evening. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin. Graveside service will be held at 2 P.M. on Wednesday at the Westlawn Cemetery near Lehigh, Iowa with military honors by the Iowa National Guard, Ft. Dodge American Legion and the Patriot Guard. Casket bearers will be Michelle Adams, Sean Daniels, Art Ortiz, Joe Daniels, Trevor Daniels, Hunter Daniels, Jake Daniels, Beth Petersen, and Mitch Petersen. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on August 17, 1919 on his family’s farm near Lehigh, IA, he was the son of John and Zelda (Lang) Daniels. He grew up in Lehigh and graduated from Lehigh High School in 1936. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1941 and served three and a half years during WWII. He received the Bronze Star and multiple campaign ribbons for his service. He returned to Lehigh following his military service and was married to Hazel E. Hay on September 22, 1944 at the home of her parents. The couple lived in a very small farm house near Lehigh and Wayne worked as a Fuller Brush Salesman for several years. The couple moved to Council Bluffs in 1948 where he worked as a Railway Post Office clerk on the Burlington Rail Road between Omaha and Chicago. Wayne and Hazel moved to Carroll in 1968 where he was the night supervisor at the Carroll Post Office. He became Post Master in 1971 and retired in 1980. Wayne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll where he served on many boards and committees. He was also very active with the Gideons, Kiwanis, the Good Samaritans, RSVP and he served several years on the New Hope Village Board. On two separate occasions Wayne received the governor’s award for being a “Top Ten Volunteer” for the State of Iowa. Wayne and Hazel moved to Swan House in June of 2010 and to Keelson Harbour in Spirit Lake in March of 2014. He enjoyed visiting with people and he never met a stranger. He also enjoyed camping, canoeing, hunting, riding motorcycles, singing, and he had traveled all fifty states with his family. Wayne is survived by his wife Hazel of Spirit Lake; four sons: Dennis Daniels and his wife Carol of Summerville, SC, Gary Daniels of Spirit Lake, John “Jack” Daniels and his wife Becky of Spirit Lake, and Charles “Chuck” Daniels and his wife Karey of Allen, TX; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Dean and John.
