Ward Eldon Salisbury

Ward Salisbury, age 95, of Glidden passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Born on April 25, 1912 at the home farm seven miles northeast of Glidden. He was a son of Harold and Pearl (Cross) Salisbury. After graduating from Glidden High School in 1931 he attended Iowa State University where he received his freshman football numeral. He was married to Madolene McMurry of Glidden who was a teacher in the Lake City School. The following spring they moved to his parents farm. In 1942 Ward was named Master Swine Producer of Iowa. In the 1950’s, he was elected president of the Glidden Co-op Board and maintained this position for 10 years. On February 3, 1989 Madolene died. On August 31, 1990 he married Doris Snyder. He was a member of the Glidden Presbyterian Church and held several positions including Ruling Elder. He was a member of the Haggai Masononic Lodge in Glidden for over 50 years and also belonged to Sons of the American Revoloutionary War. In 1999, he established the Ward E. Salisbury Agricultural Scholarship Fund which is administered by the Glidden Haggai Masonic Lodge. Ward was a major contributor to the Glidden Library, St. Anthony Regional Hospital and Nursing Home and the Swan Lake Education Center. In March of 2003, he and Doris became residents of the Swan House in Carroll. Survivors include a step-daughter: Denise Muhlbauer and her husband Leon of Glidden; Janine Elder and her husband Don of New Mexico; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two nieces: Maxine Mindling of Indiana, and Dorothy Salisbury of Missouri; and two nephews: James Watson and John Watson of Omaha, Nebraska. Ward was preceded in death by his wife Doris, a great grandson Logan Muhlbauer, brothers Orris and Glenn Salisbury, a sister Thelma Watson, and his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the Glidden Presbyterian Church. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. and a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Casket bearers will be: Brian Elder, Cam Elder, Andy Thielen, Matt Muhlbauer, Ryan Muhlbauer, and Duane Bundt.
