Walter Edward Thomas, age 83, of Carroll passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, February 11, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Terry Plocher officiating.  Organist for the service will Ellen Severin and Taydem Shoesmith as soloist.  Casket bearers will be Waylan Shoesmith, Trey Shoesmith, Jordan Shoesmith, Jason Bush, Randy Anderson, and Jeff Honold.  Honorary casket bearers will be Jordan Collins, Peyton Gurney, Mitchell Gurney, Olivia Gurney, Tanner Heuton, Troy Heuton, Troy Dultra, and Margo Locke.  Military honors will be conducted at the church by the Carroll American Legion.  Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Lake City at a later date.

Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Sunday evening.  Visitation will resume at the First United Methodist Church at 10:00 A.M. on Monday until the time of service.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com

Born on November 16, 1935 in Chillicothe, Ohio, he was the son of Lewis and Margaret (Smith) Thomas.  He grew up Chillicothe where he graduated from high school in 1953.  Walter enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 18 and served eight years stationed in New York, Illinois, and Korea.  Following his military service he returned to San Diego, CA and worked for the Civil Service as an equipment operator.  He was married to Angela Barker on November 23, 1963 in Las Vegas, NV.  The couple made their home in Oxnard, CA.   Walter was later remarried to Rose Marie Gurnery on December 23, 1989 in Carroll.  He worked for Tractor Supply for six years, first in Pierre, SD and then transferred to Carroll.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Carroll.  Walter enjoyed fishing, working with youth groups, boating, camping, motor cycles, and playing with his grandchildren.

Walter is survived by his wife Rose Marie Thomas of Carroll; his children: Stacey Locke (Margo) of California, Stephanie Thomas of Maryland, Heather Dutra (Troy) of California, Jason Gurney (Julie) of Southriding, VA, and Tina Heuton (Troy) Lake City, Brooke Thomas of Nevada, and Walter E. Thomas Jr. of California; five grandchildren: Jordan, Peyton, Mitchell, Olivia, and Tanner; a sister Marjorie Keel of Chillicothe, OH; his mother-in-law Beverly Maule of Lake City; and many nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Margaret Thomas; two brothers: Lewis and Calvin; six sisters: Pauline, Martha, Julie, Nancy, Barbara, and a sister in infancy.
