Wallace E. Lumsden was born on August 16, 1928 near Burke, SD to Thomas T. & Doris (Cady) Lumsden. The family moved to Hill City, MN where they lived for 7 years and then later moved to Hubbard, NE.
In 1949, Wallace moved to Coon Rapids, IA. The day after Thanksgiving in 1950 he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. On Oct. 18, 1952, he was honorably discharged. He returned to Coon Rapids and purchased the Standard Oil Station.
He and Arlene Frank were married on May 12, 1954 at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids, IA. To this marriage they had 7 children. After selling the gas station, Wallace worked for Carroll County as a road grader operator in the Coon Rapids area until 1967. He then went to work for Garst & Thomas Seed Corn Company in Coon Rapids, IA until his retirement in 1987. In 2002, Wallace and his wife Arlene moved to Carroll, IA.
His friends knew him as “Wally” and he was an active member in the Alcoholic Anonymous Program. Wally spent over 20 years helping people within the recovery program. Wally was known for trying to brighten your day with either a story or joke. His hobbies included playing cards with his family, woodworking, fishing, playing his accordion, mandolin and harmonica.
Wallace is survived by 4 daughters and 3 sons: Maureen (Danny) Wiederin, Gilbertsville, KY; Mark (Cindy) Lumsden, Conroe, TX; Jean (Kevin) Lumsden-Rasmussen, Glidden, IA; Joe Lumsden, Moorpark, CA; Jim (Stephanie) Lumsden, Coon Rapids, IA; Mary (Mike) Maystadt III of Prescott Valley, AZ and Julie (Jim) Maystadt of Carroll, IA. Wallace has 15 grandchildren, Cris, Curt and Heath Wiederin; Melissa Sunila and Kim Treadwell; Josh and Luke Mitchell; Seth and Caitlin Rasmussen; Wyatt Lumsden; Tania and Sam Staffan; Nicole and Michaela Maystadt and Paige Maystadt; great grandchildren are Tristan, Danielle, Harley Ann, and Addison; and he had one sister, Irene Crosier of Coon Rapids, IA.
Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene in 2005; his parents, Thomas T. & Doris (Cady) Lumsden; his parents-in-law, George & Gertrude Frank; brother-in-law, Clair Crosier.
Visitation will be April 25th at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home beginning at 1 p.m. to the time of the service at 3 p.m. with Glenn Determan leading the service.
