Virgil D. Zimmerman, age 96, of Carroll, IA passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to Peace Lutheran Church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Becky Miller. Casket bearers will be Danny Tigges, Gene Wiederin, Bob Anderson, Jim Zimmerman, Dave Hill, and Gary Tiefenthaler. Honorary casket bearers will be Virgil’s grandchildren. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on June 2, 1917 at Lake City, IA, he
was the son of John and Florence (Kindred)
Zimmerman. He grew up on a farm south of
Lake City and attended country school. He
was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden. After his schooling he worked with his father and later farmed on his own south of Glidden. Virgil played the trumpet, starting as a young boy, for the Johnny Kuker Band traveling all over the Midwest. He later formed his own band called King’s of Rhythm. He was married to Esther Ott on June 26, 1938 in Carroll by Rev. Blakey. Virgil and Esther raised their family on two farms, one south of Glidden, and after 1955 south of Ralston. In 1971 they moved to a farm east of Ralston on the old Lincoln Highway. Virgil and Esther owned and operated Virgil’s Frosted Mug restaurant in Glidden for many years. They moved to Carroll in 1983 when Virgil retired from farming and went to work for Newton Manufacturing selling advertising materials. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden. Virgil enjoyed ballroom dancing and big band music. He also enjoyed flowers, gardening, and collecting classic automobiles and tractors. Virgil drove his white 1965 Cadillac in countless parades in Carroll and all over Iowa.
Virgil is survived by his three children: Sheryl “Sherry” Jane Pemble of Carroll; Doyle Virgil Zimmerman and his wife Diane of Omaha, NE, Douglas Dale Zimmerman and his wife Sheryl of Carroll; seven grandchildren: David Pemble and his wife Donna of Carroll, Jacqueline Martin and her husband Jason of Omaha, NE, Christine Kanger and her husband Ryan of Omaha, NE, Justin Zimmerman and his fiancé Becky Mollak of Omaha, NE, Lindsey Brolliar and her husband Nate of Omaha, NE, Dale Zimmerman of Tripoli, IA, and Bradley Zimmerman and his fiancé Dejah Thompson; fourteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a brother John “Junior” Zimmerman and his wife Dorothy of Ralston; and several nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther in 2004, and a brother George.
