Virgil J. Nieland, age 78, of Ralston passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a courageous 7 year battle with cancer.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Timothy Johnson as celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 4:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. Lector for the Mass will be Leah Dunn. Gift bearers will be Christy Heisterkamp and Jessie Nieland. Music for the Mass will be by Mary Ross and Kathleen Macke. Casket bearers will be Tim Willey, Eric Heisterkamp, Mike Nieland, Chris Naylor, Butch Gregory, and Terry Wiederin. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Born on September 16, 1936 in Rockwell City, Iowa, he was the son of Julius Sr. and Emma (Huegerich) Nieland. He grew up in the Lake City – Rockwell City area on his family’s farms. Virgil graduated from Rockwell City High School in 1955. He worked as a farm hand following high school and in the fall of 1958 he went to work for McLaughlin farms where he worked for 29 years. He then worked for Denton Wenger Farms, Trausch Refrigeration, and Naylor Farms. He was married to Sharon Morris on June 28, 1958 at Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in the Glidden-Ralston area where they raised their family. Virgil was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton until its closing when he became a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, golfing, and stock car races. Virgil was an Avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Virgil is survived by a daughter Renee Willey Carter and her husband David of Glidden; three sons: Ronald Nieland and his wife Mary of Willey, Iowa, Roger Nieland and his wife Peggy of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Richard Nieland and his wife Carla of Garrett, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three brothers: Donald “Mick” Nieland and his wife Kay of Carroll, Iowa, James Nieland and his wife Pamela of Carroll, Iowa, and Larry Nieland and his wife Karen of Tucson, Arizona; a sister Mary Schroeder and her husband Dan of Tucson, Arizona;two brothers-in-law Marvin Morris and his wife Marty of Ft. Worth, Texas and Dan Hansen of Honey Creek, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Mary Brown of Carroll, Lillian Nieland of Carroll, and Patty Ninemick of Chicago, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sharon in 2000, a brother Julius Jr., a sister Erma Hanson, and a son-in-law Bill Willey.
