Vernus "Vern" L. Schroeder, age 74, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at his home in Carroll. Private family graveside services will be held at the Holy Angels Cemetery in Roselle. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Vernus’ family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on November 24, 1941 in Dallas Center, IA, he was the son of Belton “Red” and Hilda (Steffes) Schroeder. His family moved to Churdan when he was a boy where he grew up and attended school. Vernus worked several jobs as a young man as well as helping his mother in the Churdan Café. He was a very thoughtful man and would help anyone in need. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1958 and served four years. Vernus was united in marriage to Barbara Moore in 1959 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Scranton. To this union were born two sons: Scott and Steve. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Vernus worked several construction jobs in several different states before moving back to Iowa. He lived in Lake View, Templeton, and Maple River before making his home in Carroll for the past seven years. Vernus enjoyed traveling throughout the country making a living doing construction. He met many good friends along the way on his Friday night ventures. He loved life and enjoyed having fun. He was a member of Long Beach Masonic Lodge #327 of Long Beach, CA, and he was a Master Mason and Shriner in the state of Georgia. Vernus is survived by two sons: Scott Gibson (Jodi) of Nebraska and Steve Gibson (Jeanie) of Carroll; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two brothers: Ron Schroeder (Phyllis) of Carroll and Elroy Schroeder (Linda) of California; his special lady Linda Harms of Carroll and her family, and many good friends. Vernus was preceded in death by his parents Belton and Hilda Schroeder.
