Vernell T. Schmitz, age 86, of Carroll passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her home on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Barb McDermott as organist. Lectors for the Mass will be Virgil and Della Lappe. Gift bearers will be Vernell’s great-grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Vernell’s grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on February 6, 1930 on her family’s farm near Templeton she was the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Bluml) Schlichte. Her mother passed away when she was two weeks old and Vernell lived with her Aunt Anna Schlichte until she was eight years old. She moved back to the family home and attended school at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Following her schooling she worked on the farm. She was married to Robert A. Schmitz on April 18, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton by Fr. Frances Schultes. The couple made their home in Kinross where they owned and operated Schmitz Hardware Store. They moved to Halbur for several years and later to Arcadia where they raised their family. She was a homemaker until her kids were raised and then went to work as office manager at her husband’s business, Bob Schmitz Sales and Service in Arcadia. She also managed the rental properties they owned. She was an active member for 50 years of St. John’ Parish in Arcadia. After moving to Carroll, she became active with Holy Spirit Parish serving on the guild there as well. Vernell used her creative talents decorating cakes for all occasions. She enjoyed decorating her home, Christmas time, volunteering at New Hope Village and RSVP, and spending time with her family. Vernell is survived by her husband Robert of 66 years of Carroll; a daughter Dr. Bonnie Bauer (David) of Delmar, IA; two sons: Ronnie Schmitz (Denise) of Carroll and Donnie Schmitz (Lois) of Carroll; nine grandchildren: Curtis Bauer (Stephanie), Jason Bauer, Eric Bauer (Val), Nathan Bauer (Kristi), Tony Schmitz (Sarah), Suzanne Mays (Troy), Joey Schmitz, Robert Schmitz (Linda), and Spencer Schmitz; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Arlene Schiltz (Joe) of Manilla and Della Lappe (Virgil) of Glidden; a brother Dale Schlichte (Theresa) of Templeton; three sisters-in-law Ardella Schlichte, MaryAnn Schlichte, and Juliana Schmitz; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Vernell was preceded in death by her parents Katherine and Edward Schlichte, her step mother Regina Schlichte, two brothers Robert and Orville Schlichte, brothers-in-law :Raymond Englen, Alfred Wittrock, Joe Schiltz, Ambrose Schmitz (Stella), Walter Schmitz (Louise), Alver Schmitz, and sister-in-law Marcella Klocke (Herbert).
