Vern R. Stubbe, age 79, of Scranton passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes. Casket bearers will be his nine grandsons. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Tuesday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton. The casket will be moved to the Scranton United Methodist Church at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on October 9, 1937 in Monroe, SD, he was the son of Ben and Anna (Schwertman) Stubbe. Following his schooling, Vern worked with his father on the farm. He was married to Nina Stevens on March 7, 1958 at the First Reformed Church in Monroe, SD. The couple lived on his family’s farm and Vern worked for Finn’s Ice Cream Factory in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple moved to Cleghorn, IA, in November of 1969 and Vern worked as a farmhand for Clarence Fuhrman until April of 1975. On April 6, 1975, the Stubbe’s moved to Alexander, IA, where he worked for Foster Barkema as a farmhand. In August of 1976, they moved to Scranton, IA where he worked for Bob Eason on his farm and they moved into Scranton in August of 1984. Vern went to work for the Oscar Meyer Pork Plant in Perry, IA in 1984 which later became IBP and Tyson. Vern retired for the first time at the age 66. In May of 2004 he began working for Farner-Bocken in Carroll and retired from there in October of 2006. In retirement, Vern mowed yards and did snow removal. Vern enjoyed camping, fishing, rock hunting, following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, the Iowa Hawkeyes, going for antique tractor rides, and spending time with family. Vern is survived by his wife Nina of 59 years of Scranton; a son Kenny Stubbe (Carol) of Glidden; two daughters: Charla Attarsaheli (Mehrdad) of St. Cloud, MN, and Brenda Hackett (Pat) of Kingsley, IA; ten grandchildren: David Attarsaheli of Chicago, Nick Stubbe (Kelly) Ralston, Josh Hackett (Kimmie) of Kingsley, Kim Best (Mike) Lake City, Sheena Stahlnecker (Matt) of Greta, NE, Kayla Marvin (Jarred) of Ft. Dodge, Samantha Mozqueda (Jose) of Kingsley, Jeremiah Stubbe (Kelsey) of Carroll, Jeremy Hackett (Brittany) of Kingsley, and Cassidy Stubbe of Glidden; 18 great-grandchildren: Hailey, Christian, Rachael, Parker, Tori, Payton, Arianna, Brandan, Iyan, Porter, Cooper, Conner, Kiah, Damian, Avery, Lilly, Diego, Grayson, and two on the way; two sisters: Ione Haddican of Marion, SD, and Arlene Helgager of Viborg, SD; two brothers: Alvin Stubbe of Jackson, MN, and Marvin Stubbe (Jackie) of Killeen, TX; a sister-in-law Eileen Scheidt of Marion, SD; a brother-in-law LeRoy Stevens (Erma) of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Vern was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Anna Stubbe; and his mother and father-in-law Anna and Jacob Stevens.
