Verle Matthew Tiefenthaler

Verle Matthew Tiefenthaler, age 87, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, July 11, 2025 at the Carroll American Legion in Carroll.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Verle was born on July 11, 1937 in Breda, IA, and he was the son of Norbert and LaVerna (Ricke) Tiefenthaler.  He grew up in Breda where he graduated from high school in 1955.  Verle was drafted by the San Francisco Giants out of high school and played professional baseball for several years. First for the San Francisco Giants and later for the Chicago White Sox.  He was married to Judith Vogel in 1959 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan.  Verle was drafted into the United States Army in 1958 and served two years during the Korean Conflict.  Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and played baseball until moving back to Carroll where he worked for Badding Construction and later Juergens Produce and Feed until retirement.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.  Verle enjoyed coaching little league baseball in Carroll and in 1999 he was inducted into the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame.  He loved his family dearly and cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Verle is survived by his five children and their families: son Jeff Tiefenthaler of Carroll, daughter Janet Brown (Randy) of Omaha, daughter Jill Tiefenthaler of Carroll, son Jay Tiefenthaler (Julie Waring) of Waukee, and daughter Julie Short (Allan) of Carroll; six grandchildren: Trevor Tiefenthaler (fiancée Brittany Klocke), Morgan Collum, Miranda Kuehl (Blake), Hailey Tiefenthaler, Jamie Stuhr (fiancé Connor Smith),  and Tristan Brown; a sister Marlene Heisterkamp (Kenny) of Rapid City, SD; three sisters-in-law: Carol Friedrichsen of Clive, IA, Dianne Trout of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Mary Lou Evans (Don) of Rio Rancho, NM; two brothers-in-law: Tom Vogel (Gayle) of Spirit Lake and Steve Vogel (Jeanne) of Idaho; sisters-in-law: Leah Lammers of Omaha and Mary Vogel of Churdan; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Verle was preceded in death by his wife Judy in 2002; his parents Norbert and LaVerna Tiefenthaler; his in-laws Rudy and Hermine Vogel; a sister Donita Nieland (Melvin); a brother Al Lammers; and two brothers-in-law Richard Vogel and Detlef Friedrichsen.
