Velma M. Duff, age 91, of Iowa City, Iowa, and formerly of Scranton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Scranton with Rev. Charles Thompson officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday to lie in state until the time of service. Organist for the service will be …. Casket bearers will be Ray Schiltz, Robert Schiltz, Gary Schiltz, Joe Schiltz, Bill Alberhasky, and Liness Littrell. Honorary casket bearers will be Velma’s Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Emerson Point Assisted Living at 1355 Shannon Dr. Iowa City, Iowa 52246. Born on January 17, 1919 in Bruce, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Warren and Fannie (Peterson) Hoople. She grew up in Glidden and was married to Ralph Duff on January 3, 1942, his 29th birthday, in Maryville, Missouri. The couple farmed nearly all their married life south of Scranton. After retirement they moved into Scranton where Velma lived until 2004 when she moved to Iowa City to be closer to her daughter and family. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Scranton. She was a member of the Ladene Club and the Red Hat Society. In her spare time she enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards, Wii Bowling, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are a daughter Judy Schiltz and her husband John of Iowa City; three grandchildren: Jeff Schiltz and his wife Kris of Iowa City, Judd Schiltz and his wife Jean of Lockport, Illinois, Jared Schiltz and his wife Jennifer of Parker, Colorado; four great grandchildren: Dillon, Sydney, Tyler, and Cooper; a sister Betty Delaney of California; and her special friends the Littrell family of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2003, and a sister Mildred Helfrich.
