Vance John Henning, age 80, of Scranton, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa.
Born on January 23, 1929 at Caroll, Iowa, he was the son of Burl and Maureen (Kegrice) Henning. He was the youngest of six children. He grew up on the family farm in Scranton and attended Scranton schools. He was married to Catherine McDonald of Glidden on September 3, 1950 at the United Methodist Church in Glidden. After their marriage Vance worked for Ryan’s Construction of Omaha for six years and then returned to Ralston and worked for the Ralston Coop for six years. He then farmed in the Glidden and Scranton area and moved to his family’s farm in 1973. Vance served as president of the Carroll County Beef Producers, he was a 4-H Leader, and he had served as president of the Scranton Elevator Board. In spare time he enjoyed tinkering in his machine shed, going to coffee with his friends, and spend time with his family.
Surviving are his wife of Kate of Scranton; a daughter Patty Manues and her husband Patrick of Eagle Grove, Iowa; a son Jim Henning and his wife Cindy of Webster City, Iowa; a brother Homer Henning and his wife Marge of Loves Park, Illinois; a sister Joyce Herron of Ft. Worth, Texas; a sister-in-law Lois Gregory of Jefferson, Iowa; four grandchildren: Heather Nicholls and her husband Aaron of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Christopher Manues and his wife Megan of Waukee, Iowa, Katie Fox and her husband Tyler of St. Louis, Missouri, and Kellie Henning of San Francisco, California; and a great grandson Jaxon Vance Manues. Vance was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Ruth Cook, Virginia Tatum, and a brother J.B. Henning.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:30 P.M. – 3:30 P.M. on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Ralsotn Community Building in Ralston. According to Vance’s wishes his body was donated to the Mayo Clinic Anotomical Department. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton.
