Tom was born on September 4, 1963 in Carroll, IA, and he was the son of John and Karen (Rettenmaier) Scharfenkamp.  He grew up on his family’s farm near Lidderdale and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1981.  Tom became a cattle feeder immediately after high school and continued his very successful operation, with his longtime hired man Brian Daniel and his son Tanner, up until the time of his death.  He was married to Teri Pietig on November 9, 1991 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll.  The couple made their home in Carroll where they raised their two children.  Tom was a cattle feeder at heart.  He loved the land, planting and caring for trees, and most of all spending time with his family.  He loved Friday night gravel travel with his wife, and he was very proud of the new home they recently built.

Tom is survived by his wife Teri of  rural Carroll; son Tanner Scharfenkamp (fiancée Lauren Promes) of Carroll; daughter Tori Scharfenkamp (fiancé Brad Staley) of Carroll; his mother Karen Scharfenkamp of Lidderdale; his mother-in-law Patty Pietig of Carroll; sister Lori Lloyd (Dirk) of Carroll; brother Jeff Scharfenkamp (Sue) of Carroll; sister Lisa Scharfenkamp (Randy Geneser) of Waukee; brother Jon Scharfenkamp of Lidderdale; brother-in-law Tony Pietig (Julie) of Carroll; his aunt Betty Rettenmaier of Lidderdale; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his father John Scharfenkamp; his father-in-law Jim Pietig; two siblings in infancy: Eric and Gerilyn; and his brother-in-law Jeff Pietig.
