September 8, 1933 — May 24, 2008

Susan "Susie" Hanks age 74 of Scranton, Iowa, died at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa, on May 24, 2008. Susan Caroline, daughter of George Henry Cole Sr. and Margaret May Hogencamp, was born September 8, 1933, at Onawa, Iowa. Following her schooling there, Susan worked at the Iowa Theater in Onawa. On March 16, 1957, Susan was united in marriage with William “Bill” Hanks at the First Christian Church in Onawa. Five daughters were born to this union. Susan and Bill made their home at Onawa, Whiting, Ida Grove and Odebolt before settling in Scranton in 1967. She worked in the Dietary Department at Greene County Memorial Hospital in Jefferson until her retirement in 2000. While living in Onawa, Susan was a member of the First Christian Church and the Eagles Lodge. She was presently a member of the Church of Christ in Scranton. Susan enjoyed wildlife, fishing, flowers and her dog Metters. It is an understatement to say she was an avid fan of wrestling and Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. Above all, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were most important to her. Surviving are her husband William Hanks of Scranton; five daughters: Rochelle Mitchels and husband Richard of Rippey; Lucinda Jean Kelso and husband Karl of Carroll; a daughter Christine McCool and special friend Tom Meiners of Coon Rapids; Denise Abernathy and husband John of Scranton; and Debra Probasco and husband Jerry of Knightdale, NC; 20 grandchildren: Michael Hanks, Heather Ott, Willie Blasnitz, Nick Blasnitz, Randy Kienast, Amanda Zahradnik, Kendra Kelso, Kelbi Kelso, Veronica Brinker, Justin McCool, Jeremy McCool, Carrie Fox, Jennifer Bishop, Jill Bishop, Scott Bishop, Kyle Abernathy, Clay Abernathy, Alex Abernathy, Brandi Robertson and Dairany Robertson; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother Jerry Cole and wife Candy of Hiawatha, KS; a sister-in-law Lula Mortenson of Whiting, and a brother- in-law Dennis Hanks and wife Rhonda of Lake City. Susan was preceded in death by one daughter in infancy Tina Hanks; and eight brothers and sisters: Katherine Cole, Mary Kious, Robert Cole, Louise Stanton, Ruth Heisler, Keith Cole, Myron Cole and George Cole Jr. Services will be 10 AM, Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Church of Christ in Scranton with Pastor Bob McKnight officiating. Interment will be in the Scranton Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton after 5PM on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service at 7 PM.
