Shirley Ann Onken, age 86, of Carroll passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at her home at Westwood Knolls in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale with Pastor William Weiss officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Ed Ludwig. Casket bearers will be Tracy Onken, Duane Onken, Dan Onken, Jack Kielsmeier, Jeff Koster, and Rick Onken. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
Born on September 28, 1928 in Carroll, she was the daughter of Harry and Grace (Cooper) Lyons. Shirley grew up in Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School in 1946. She began working for Arthur N. Neu on August 5, 1946 as a secretary. Shirley was married to Glenness “Fritz” Onken on February 14, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Carroll. The couple lived in Carroll until moving to the Onken Family Farm north of Carroll in 1954 where they raised their children. Shirley and Fritz retired from farming in 2001 and moved to Carroll. Shirley loved to cook, bake, and collect recipes.
She is survived by a daughter Sally Gleason and her husband Russell of Ames; a son Scott Onken of Carroll; two granddaughters: Shelly Ann Kielsmeier and her husband Jack of Altoona and Shanda Lee Gleason and her special friend Nathan Casares of Ames; a great grandson Conor; a sister Donna Sprimont and her husband Duane of Venus, TX; a sister-in-law Agnes Onken of Carroll, and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Fritz in 2006, her parents, and in-laws: Laverdos Onken and Lynel and Hilma Onken.
