Shirley Mosman

Shirley Ione (Hay) Mosman, age 95, longtime resident of Glidden, Iowa, peacefully passed away of natural causes on September 29, 2017, at the Hospice House in Omaha, in the loving company of her family. Her funeral, a service in remembrance of a life well lived, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev. Lorinda Hoover officiating. Burial will be at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden, where Shirley will join her beloved husband, Norbert Mosman, who predeceased her in 1969. The Merle Hay Post #386 American Legion Auxillary of Glidden will form an honor guard at the church and cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M . The casket will be moved to the church at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com. Born March 29, 1922, in Manning, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Basil Hay and Evelyn Day. She was also predeceased by her stepparents, Mildred Hay and Lyle Day, her half-sister Elizabeth (Day) Shaw, and her daughter-in-law Karen (Podey) Mosman. A 1938 graduate of Glidden High School, she was a near lifelong and very proud resident of Glidden, a town and its people she greatly loved. Shirley enjoyed her position as the keeper of local traditions and history, and maintained a trove of personal and WWI memorabilia from her late uncle, Merle Hay. Shirley was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Glidden and an avid supporter of the Merle Hay American Legion Post #386 Auxiliary and the National Honor Society. Until she left Glidden for Omaha in 2014, she was very involved with the United Methodist Women, Entre Nous, Bridge and Birthday Clubs. She especially enjoyed collecting “black glass” and figurines. Shirley traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as Europe and the Caribbean but always felt most at home in Glidden. Perhaps her greatest pleasure was simply having the ladies “over for cake and coffee” and a game of cards. Shirley is survived by her son, Craig Mosman (and his friend Jean Padilla) of Omaha; her daughter Marla (and her husband John) Gershkoff of Austin, Texas, grandsons Connor Mosman and Michael and Nicholas Benton; and great granddaughters Hailey and Sophia Benton. She leaves behind many friends and extended family, all of whom will miss her dearly.
