Sharon Kay Helling, age 50, of Carroll, Iowa passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Rev. Timothy Schott as Celebrant. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. on Friday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 7:00 P.M.. Lector for the Mass will be Jeff Clasen and gift bearers will be Sharon’s daughters Jaclyn and Allison. Music will be by Marci Anderson and Kathleen Macke. Burial will be in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Michael Emery, Austin Emery, Dave Mosman, John Helling, Dale Helling, and Larry Helling. Born on November 29, 1958 in Ames, Iowa, she was the daughter of Junior and Shirley (Severeide) Thrasher. She grew up in the Ames – Gilbert area and graduated from Gilbert High School in 1977. Sharon then attended Iowa State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. She married Leon B. Helling on June 20, 1981 in Ames, Iowa at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. The Helling family has lived in Carroll for the past sixteen years. During this time, Sharon has been a substitute school teacher in the Carroll School District. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll and the Iowa State Alumni Association. In her spare time she enjoyed attending Iowa State basketball games, tailgating for ISU football games, reading, and spending time with friends and family. Sharon was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and friend. Surviving are her husband Leon Helling; a daughter Jaclyn Helling of Lawrence, KS and her fiancé Cody Stamm of Des Moines; a daughter Allison Helling of Ankeny; her father Junior Thrasher of Ames; her grandmother Evvie Severeide of Story City; her mother and father-in-law Richard and Ann Helling of New Hampton; a sister Sue Price and her husband Buddy of Gilbert, a brother-in-law John Helling and his wife Linda of Harlan; a sister-in-law Bernadette Christoph and her husband Dave of New Hampton, a brother-in-law Dale Helling and his wife Joelene of West Des Moines; a brother-in-law Larry Helling and his wife Jan of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Thrasher, and her grandfather, Lester Severeide.
