She grew up south of Coon Rapids. Ruth attended country school near her home and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1945. She then attended Teacher Training and taught country school in rural Coon Rapids. On February 14, 1947, Ruth was united in marriage with Donald Smouse. A son, David was born to this union. Ruth and Don farmed near Coon Rapids for five years and then near Gray for five years before returning to Coon Rapids in 1957. She assisted Donald with his painting and decorating business. For 25 years Ruth also drove the Western Iowa Transit bus. Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids where she was baptized on April 9, 1931. In her spare time she enjoyed visiting with friends, cooking and watching baseball and basketball on television. Ruth’s great-grandchildren were a special joy to her. In 2009, when her health began to fail, Ruth became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. She died there on Saturday, July 4, 2009 – five days short of her 81st birthday. Ruth is survived by her grandson Joshua Smouse and wife Mandy of Coon Rapids; a granddaughter Sara Sneddon and husband Donnie of Talahina, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren: Lauren, Jared, Parker and Addison Smouse and Jerzie and Pheonyx Sneddon; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son.
