Russell S. Wunschel, age 83, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Banner Gardens Hospice House in Mesa, Arizona following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Tami Biggerstaff and soloist will be Marv Toft. Casket bearers will be Archie Clutter, Kevin Hatch, Jim Fix, Klindt Hatch, Austin Crouse, and Brendon Elliott. Honorary casket bearers will be Dick Collison, Jack Donovan, Darrell Sunderman, Jerry Wilson, Dale Albrecht, and Roland Langemeier. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on March 26, 1927 at Odebolt, Iowa, he was the son of Rudolph and Ruth (Adams) Wunschel. He grew up on a farm near Early and graduated from Early High School. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed for two years in Germany. Upon his return he attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska and later attended law school at Drake University. After graduation Russ was employed by the West Publishing Company lecturing to law students on legal research throughout the country. He received a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1952. He was married to Lois Ann Fix on August 14, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. The couple has lived in Carroll since 1955. Russ established his private law practice in Carroll in 1954. He retired in September of 2009. He was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, The Association of Trial Lawyers of Iowa, and The National Board of Trial Advocacy. He served on the Carroll Community School Board, the Carroll Chamber of Commerce Board, and many offices at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, playing cards, traveling, fishing, and spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife Lois of Carroll; a daughter Dee Ann Wunschel of Carroll; a son Steven Wunschel and his wife Beka of Modesto, California; a daughter Lori Elliott and her husband Blair of Overland Park, Kansas; a son David Wunschel and his wife Sharon of Richland, Washington; a daughter Kristine Elliott and her husband Joe of Dublin, Ireland; ten grandchildren: Sarah Taylor of Scottsdale, Arizona, Austin Crouse of Carroll, Morgan Waid of Modesto, California, Taylor Cox and his wife Jamie of Modesto, California, Madeline and Liza Wunschel of Modesto, California, Alyssa, Andrea, and Brendon Elliott of Overland Park, Kansas, Jacob and Maya Wunschel of Richland, Washington, and Finlay Elliott of Dublin, Ireland; two great grandchildren: Carson and Leo; two brothers-in-law: Paul Fix and his wife Lorraine of Vinton, Iowa, and John Fix and his wife Mildred of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister-in-law Virginia Wunschel of Weslaco, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Gail and Merle Wunschel, and a sister Marjorie Clutter.
