Ronald “Joe” Joseph Johnston, age 78, of Glidden, passed away on July 23, 2017 at his home in Glidden. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. John Gerald as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Gary Schon. Lector for the Mass will be Sandy Johnston. Music for the Mass will be by the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir with Mary Ross as organist. Gift Bearers will be Erica Johnston, Lydia Johnston and Ayla Toms. Mass server will be Summer Toms and Brileigh Bock. Casket bearers will be Andy Toms, Joe Johnston, Adam Johnston, George Toms, Alex Toms, Mike Lloyd, Rex Parker, and Dave McNamara. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden. Friends may call at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church after 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, where there will be a Rosary at held at 4:30 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service held at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will resume at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday until the time of the Mass. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for Joe’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com. Born on May 16, 1939 in Coon Rapids, he was the son of Jerald “Tuffy” and Ethel (Scherbring) Johnston. Joe grew up in the Glidden area, and graduated from Glidden High School in 1958. He was married to Ruth Gregory on November 7, 1959 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton by Fr. Kocker. After their marriage, Joe worked for the Glidden Coop, Farner Bocken, and Pella until his retirement. Joe was a member of the Glidden Fire Department for over 30 years. He also served on the Glidden City Council for three years. He raised and sold sweet corn along the highway in Glidden. Joe and his family delivered newspapers for the Carroll Daily Times Herald for several decades. Joe was an active member of the Men’s Club. He was also member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Joe was very proud of his family, and he enjoyed helping his community and neighbors. Joe is survived by his wife Ruth of Glidden; daughter Mary Jo Toms (Rick) of Glidden; sons: Tom Johnston (Sandy) of Land o Lakes, Florida and Gary Johnston (Amy) of Port Byron, Illinois; eight grandchildren: Joe Johnston, Adam Johnston, Erica Johnston, Andy Toms (Diana), George Toms (Victoria), Alex Toms (Mandi), Lydia Johnston, and Owen Johnston; six great-grandchildren; sisters: Judy Kurth (Bill), Jane Burdine (Ron), Janice Neal, Annie Johnston; and brothers: Jeff Johnston (Lori) and John Johnston (Chris). Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and his mother and father-in-law: George and Evelyn Gregory.
