Roger W. O’Tool, age 82, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2013 at his home in Glidden surrounded by his family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Fr. Andrew Hoffman as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Gary Schon. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake service at 7:00 P.M. by the parish. Lector for the Mass will be Jacob Kennebeck and Gift Bearers will be Alexis Free and Dan Clausen. Music for the Mass will be by Mary Ross and Mike Bolton. Special musical selections will be performed by Johnathan and Jennifer Free. Casket bearers will be Corey O’Tool, Jacob Winker, Michael O’Tool, Christopher O’Tool, Jordan O’Tool, and Rick Whitaker. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on July 7, 1931 at Auburn, Iowa, he was the son of William and Coletta (Schelle) O’Tool. Roger grew up near Breda and attended school in Auburn. Following school he farmed with his father for a time and moved to Omaha where he worked for Purina Feed. He moved back to Carroll and drove a taxi for Carroll Cab Company. He was married to Delores Meister on January 4, 1950. To this union were born four children: John, Larry, Dennis, and Sharon. The family lived at and operated the Carroll Courts Motel west of town for many years. During this time Roger also worked as a dispatcher for the Carroll Police Department and later became a Deputy Sherriff for Carroll County. He later owned and operated the Attic Lounge in Glidden for many years and retired at age 62. In retirement he drove school bus for the Glidden – Ralston School District part time. Roger was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, working in his yard, feeding birds and squirrels with the feeders he made, and he was a NASCAR fan. Roger especially enjoyed spending time with his family, his grandchildren, and his many good friends.
Roger is survived by his wife Carol O’Tool of Glidden, Iowa; a daughter Sharon Winker and her special friend Jim Gorby of Scranton, Iowa; two sons: Larry O’Tool and his wife Vicki of Arcadia, Iowa, and Dennis O’Tool and his wife Cathy of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren: Corey O’Tool and his wife Tina, Michael O’Tool, Christopher O’Tool and his wife Leah, Jacob Winker and his wife Lisa, and T.J. Rudd; six great grandchildren: Jordan, Sierra, Deserae, Victoria, Rebecca and Cody; a sister Iva Boisen of Sac City, Iowa; a brother Melvin O’Tool and his wife Joyce of Boone, Iowa; his father-in-law John Arrowsmith and his wife Dee of Glidden, Iowa; four sisters-in-law: Linda Free and her husband Allen of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Joni Bock and Charlie Bock of Carroll, Iowa, JoAnn Clausen of Glidden, Iowa, and Dorothy O’Tool of Odebolt, Iowa; a brother-in-law Ralph Gross of Omaha, Nebraska; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Arnim and Lowell O’Tool, two sisters: Dorothy Pollman and Darlene Gross, a son John in infancy, and a grandson Timothy in infancy.
