Funeral Service for Robert Lee Sterns, age 78, of Carroll and a long time teacher at Carroll Community School will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 16, 2010 with Pastor Brian Licht and Pastor David Anthony Officiating. Robert died at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll on January 13, 2010. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 PM on Friday where there will be a prayer service at 7 PM. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 AM on Saturday where the body will lie in state until time of the service. Organist for the funeral will be Jan Hoff. Casket Bearers will be grandchildren: Amy Schoon, Amanda Sterns, Amber Sterns, Alicia Sterns, Jessie Sterns and Sam Sterns. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Jim Knot, Don Jones, Vic Meiners, Ted Meiners, Wendall Wittrock and Donald Spooner.
Robert was born on September 16, 1931 at Fontenel, Iowa and was the son of Donald Edward and Mabel F (Staley) Sterns.He attended and graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1949. He was a wrestler in high School and contined his wrestling at college. He was active in competitive pistol and rifle competition where he won numerous awards. He also ran in the Drake relays. He attended Iowa State teachers college now University of Northern Iowa) for 2 years and was drafted in July 1952 and served as a sergeant in the army during the Korean War until 1954. Following the service he returned to UNI and completed his Bachelors Degree in Education graduating in 1956. He started teaching at Carroll Community school in March of 1956. He was united in marriage to Doris F. Becker on April 8, 1956 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Robert taught at Carroll Community school until he retired in 1993.He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of the state and national education Associations,and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, shooting, fixing cars, coffee and being with family and friends.
Surviving are his wife Doris of Carroll, 3 sons: Alan of Carroll, David and his wife Sonya of Carroll and Dennis of Ames, Iowa, a daughter in law Michelle Sterns of Carroll and the following grandchildren: Amy Schoon, Amanda and Alicia, Amber Sterns, Jessie and Sam Sterns and two great grandchildren: Evan and Amia Schoon. And two brothers Dick Sterns of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and Chuck Sterns and his wife Judy of Des Moines, Iowa and two in laws Albert and June Harvey of Des Moines, Iowa and Ann and Tony MARINO of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father in law Louis and Pauline Becker, a nephew Mitchel Sterns, sisters in law Sharon Sterns, Beverly Sterns and a grandson Donald Sterns, Sisters in law Lois and Francis Becker.
