Robert Schmitz of Carroll passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017 at his home in Carroll. He was 88 years, 7 months, and 27 days old. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Kevin Richter as Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Lector for the Mass Della Lappe. Music will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Barb McDermott as organist. Gift bearers will be Bob’s great-grandchildren and casket bearers will be Bob’s grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Bob’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on April 1, 1929 on his family’s farm west of Halbur, he was the son of Frank and Gertrude (Williams) Schmitz. He attended St. Augustine Catholic School in Halbur. Following his schooling years, he worked at Eischeid Hardware in Halbur. He was married to Vernell Schlichte on April 18, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton by Fr. Frances Schultes. The couple made their home in Kinross where they owned and operated Schmitz Hardware Store. They moved to Halbur for several years and later to Arcadia where they raised their family and owned and operated Bob’s Hardware and later Bob Schmitz Sales and Service. Bob and Vernell also owned and managed several rental properties. He was a member of the volunteer fire department in Arcadia for many years and became their cook in later years. Bob enjoyed fishing, making his famous horseradish, hunting pigeons in his younger days, making wine, gardening, having mountain oyster and fish fries, and going to the casino. Bob’s famous tag line upon leaving a good visit was “I’ll see ya in the funny papers”. Bob is survived by his daughter Dr. Bonnie Bauer (David) of Delmar; two sons: Ronnie Schmitz (Denise) of Carroll and Donnie Schmitz (Lois) of Carroll; nine grandchildren: Curtis Bauer (Stephanie), Jason Bauer, Eric Bauer (Val), Nathan Bauer (Kristi), Tony Schmitz (Sarah), Suzanne Mays (Troy), Joey Schmitz, Robert Schmitz (Linda), and Spencer Schmitz; seventeen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Juliana Schmitz of Carroll, MaryAnn Schlichte of Wisconsin, and Della Lappe (Virgil) of Glidden; a brother-in-law Dale Schlichte (Theresa) of Templeton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Gertrude Schmitz; his mother and father-in-law Edward and Katherine Schlichte; his step mother-in-law Regina Schlichte; two sisters: Anita at age 7 and Marcella Klocke (Herb); four brothers: Lawrence in infancy, Ambrose (Stella), Walter (Louise), and Alver; and his wife Vernell on December 17, 2016. And as Bob would always say: “I’ll see ya in the funny papers”!!
