Self-described as the most academically-challenged individual to ever graduate college, Bob went on to graduate from Loras Academy, Loras College, and Creighton University. He served as a staff sergeant for the United States Air Force during the Korean War. More recently, he delighted in sharing his stories of travel to Seoul in bullet-ridden busses and one Thanksgiving celebration in Japan. After his service abroad, Bob served at the Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas. In 1953, Bob met the love of his life while on a double-date with friends. They didn’t go on the date together, but afterwards, he told his friend that he was going to marry that woman. That special woman, S. Clare (Stroda) and Bob were married on September 18, 1954 in Abilene, Kansas. This union was the start of a wonderful family, all of whom were fiercely-loved by Bob. Family and friends are fond of the many Bob-isms that were told over the years. His daily routine included cards in Halbur with a circle of friends that frequently commented, “Don’t be a Bob,” whenever they were advised on which card to play next. Bob loved his annual fishing trips with all of the Greteman men and close friends. He also excelled in math. With every re-telling, his fish got an inch longer. When Bob wasn’t playing cards or fishing, he was playing golf, watching golf on TV, or talking about his adopted son, Zach Johnson, whom he got to play a round with in 2014. Bob partnered with his brother, Louis, and started Greteman Agency in 1953, serving clients in the insurance and real estate industries his entire life. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Moose International, Elk’s Lodge, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, City of Carroll Parks and Recreation Board, and the Kuemper Century Club. Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clare (Stroda) Greteman of Carroll. His brother, Louis (Julia) Greteman of Carroll. His children Jan (Alan Raxter) Greteman of Sierra Madre, CA, Joe (Sherry) Greteman of Carroll, David (Debbie) Greteman of Carroll, Katie (Pat) Hagan of Boone, Matt (Peggy) Greteman of Carroll, Amy (Mike) Fitzgerald of Kansas City, MO, Dan (Ree) Greteman of West Des Moines, Tim (Angela) Greteman of Waukee, Chuck of Urbandale, and Aaron (Tricia) Greteman of Algona.
