Rita Ann Hiber, age 87, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of Hastings, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011 at SunnyBrook Senior Living in Carroll.
Rita was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Patrick and Sue (Finn) McGovern. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Holy Name High School and the College of St. Mary. She was married to Richard [Dick] J. Hiber on August 3, 1946 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Omaha. Dick owned and operated Hiber’s Jewelry Store in Hastings, and Rita worked as a bookkeeper for McBride Vision Clinic for many years until retiring at age 82. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll and St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Hastings. Rita was a devoted member of the Catholic Daughters in Hastings, active in the Republican Party, and an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. She was a member of the Lochland Country Club where she enjoyed her friends and playing bridge. Rita loved sewing, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the new friends she met while living at SunnyBrook.
Surviving are her three daughters: Sue Colgan and husband Steve of Rapid City, South Dakota; Cathy Greteman and husband Mike of Carroll; and Patti Hawkins and husband Fred Sr. of Omaha; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a sister, Sr. Patrice McGovern, O.P. of Dubuque; a brother Joe McGovern and wife Kaye of Edgewood, Kentucky; and a sister Patricia McGovern of Omaha; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In Carroll: Family will be receiving friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6 at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish.
In Hastings: There will be a visitation at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church on Friday, January 7 at 12:45 p.m. with Mass following at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hastings, Nebraska.
