Richard K. Phipps, age 76, of Halbur formerly of San Jose, California, passed away at his son’s home in Halbur on Friday, August 27, 2010. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Fr. Dale Reiff officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. Military honors will be conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Garden in Rochester, Minnesota. Born on October 1, 1933 at Rochester, Minnesota, he was the son of Robert and Ruth (Strickler) Phipps. He grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, and Pierre, South Dakota and graduated from high school in Pierre in 1952. After high school he enlisted in the United States Airforce and served two years as a fire fighter and was retired due to a service related illness. He was married to Mardell Vogt of Carroll on October 11, 1958 in Rochester. The couple moved to San Jose, California where they raised their family. Dick worked for Hewlett Packard as a sheet metal worker. After retirement he moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he lived until moving to Halbur in 2008 to be close to family. He was a member of the Catholic Church, the V.F.W., and the American Legion. In his spare time Dick enjoyed fishing, going to the casino, watching movies, and traveling. Surviving are two sons: Robert “Ted” Phipps and his wife Liz of Dale City, Virginia, and Rick Phipps and his wife Patti of Halbur; six grandchildren T.J., Robyn, Rachael, Quinten, Wesley, and Jacob; and one great granddaughter; a sister Betty Ratsch of Kent, Washington; six sisters-in-law Laura Stangl of Minnesota, Hattie Phipps of Texas, Margaret Stangl of Minnesota, Marilyn Bauer of Newell, Iowa, Corrine Gollobit of Nebraska and Bonnie Vogt of Carroll; and three brothers-in-law Lloyd Vogt of Minnesota, Virvil Nelson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Dennis Vogt of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents , his wife 1999, two brothers: Robert and Quint, and two sisters Grace Ferber and Eda Nelson.
