Richard Duane Main, age 93, of Carroll passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to St. Paul Lutheran Church at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Jan Hoff and soloist will be John Wagner. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Mike Parkis, John Parkis, Chris Parkis, Scott Anderson, and Jeff Huegerich and granddaughter Debbie Tate. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday at the Greenfield Cemetery near Greenfield with Military Honors by the Head – Endres Post #265 of the Greenfield American Legion and the Iowa National Guard. Born on May 11, 1922 in Keldron, SD, he was the son of Zennie and Edith (Morgan) Main. His family moved to Greenfield when he was a small child. Richard attended school in Greenfield and worked on his father’s farm. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served four years during WWII. He was in the 899th Tank Destroyer Division and landed on Utah Beach on D Day. He then fought at the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton. Richard attained the rank of Sargent and was a Tank Commander. Following his military service he returned to Greenfield and was married to Dorothy Thompson on November 29, 1946 in Troy, KS. The couple moved to Carroll in 1960 where Richard worked as an over the road truck driver until he retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Carroll American Legion. Richard was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Green Bay Packers, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed going to coffee in the morning and visiting with his friends. Richard is survived by a step-son Charles Parkis and his wife Betty of Carroll; two daughters: Patricia Anderson of Phoenix, AZ, and Janet Huegerich – Von Holdt and her husband Jeff of Carroll; eight grandchildren: Mike Parkis, Scott Anderson, John Parkis, Mary Tuel, Debbie Tate, Jeff Huegerich, Brian Parkis, and Chris Parkis; thirteen great grandchildren: Brady, Kira, Shea, Riley, Haley, Cole, Chloe, Tyler, Taylor, Kirstin, Jessica, Betsy, and Brianne; a sister Hazel Rath of Fontanelle, IA; brother Lesley Main and his wife Roxanne of Hot Springs, AK; two brothers-in-law Eugene Thompson of Fontanelle, IA, and Don Thompson and his wife Joan of Greenfield, IA; sisters-in-law: Diana Thompson of Greenfield, IA, Kerrie Main of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy in 2010; three brothers: Willard, Lyle, and Beryl; a grandson Kelly Taylor, a great granddaughter Chelsea Tuel in infancy.
