Born on June 19, 1929 in Carroll, Dick was the son of Herbert C. Beck and Edith Campbell Beck.  Dick grew up in Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School in 1947. He attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake with a scholarship in Football and Basketball. He met his future wife Pat, at Buena Vista and was married August 20, 1950.  Dick graduated in 1951 and began his coaching career in Nemaha.  In 1954 he became a history teacher and assistant coach at Albert City until 1956 when he changed careers to be an insurance agent with Woodmen Accident and Life Company in Storm Lake, then stayed with that company for over 60 years.  He advanced with Woodman to earn an Agency Manager in Carroll in 1965 and received many awards for his achievements.  Dick “retired” in 1994 and enjoyed wintering in McClellan, Texas with his wife, for 8 years.

One of his fondest memories in his early teens is when his father bought him a horse “Boots”.  Boots and Dick were a good fit, both head strong and athletic.  Their mutual understanding of each other won the Championship of Carroll County in Pleasure Horse.  Dick excelled in all sports and his love of competition carried into adulthood.  He ran the chains for every CHS home football game when his oldest son began playing and continued for over 20 years.  He was his kids biggest fan and critiqued every game with all but his 1st daughter, because the only sport for girls then was golf, although he would on occasion walk the course getting in some coaching from the sidelines.  His golf coaching led to 2nd place in father- daughter golf tournaments, but the best golf game is when his daughter beat him by 2 strokes over 18 holes.

Surviving are children Greg (Deb) Beck of Omaha, Nebraska, Sue (Mark) Huebsch of Scranton, Brian (Lisa) Beck of Greenwood, Indiana, Alison (Tim) Brantley of Franktown, Colorado, Nancy (Don) Vogl of Prescott, Wisconsin, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 5 step-granddaughters, his brother Ray Beck of San Benito, Texas and sister-in-law Noel Whiteside of Rocky River, Ohio.

Preceding him in death are his wife Patricia in 2008, parents Herbert and Edith Beck, parents-in-law Dr. Merle and Elsie Whiteside, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. Robert and Maxine Whiteside and brother-in-law Richard Whiteside.
