Larry Gene Gatrel, age 83, of Carroll passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at his home in Carroll surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 127 W. 9th St. in Carroll, with The Rt. Rev. Alan Scarf officiating. Music for the service will be Carol Block as organist and Carl Wilburn will be soloist and guitarist. Casket bearers will be Michael Madigan, Stephen Quandt, Marty Nebel, Christopher Loew, Jeremy David, Benjamin Lohmann, and Michael Wenck. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:00-10:00 A.M. on Saturday. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online Condolences may be left for Larry’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com The family suggests memorials be made to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Spirit Lake, Iowa, and for Dr. Terry Shively and Stephanie Shively’s mission trips or other missionary projects and may be left at the funeral home or the church. Larry was born November 10, 1933, in Seymour, Iowa, son of Thomas Henry and Lena Marie (Sebben) Gatrel. Larry attended grade school in Davenport, Iowa, Kenosha, Wisconsin and Farmer School in rural Numa, Iowa. He graduated from Seymour High School, Seymour, Iowa in 1951. On July 26, 1953 Larry married Janice Ella DeVore at the First Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa. They have spent 64 years together. Larry was employed as a Television Technician in Centerville for 23 years. He attended Indian Hills Community College and attended The Episcopal Theological Seminary in Kentucky 1974 -1977. Larry received his Theology degree upon graduation and was ordained to the Diaconate at the Church of the Epiphany, Centerville, on August 6, 1977. On October 21, 1978 he was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests at Trinity Episcopal Church, Carroll, Iowa. Larry served Trinity Church in Carroll and Trinity Church, Sac City Iowa from August 1977 to September 1985. In 1985 Larry was called to be Priest in Charge of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Spirit Lake, Iowa and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Spencer, Iowa where he served both congregations until St. Stephen’s closed and merged with St. Alban’s in 1993 and continued to serve Spirit Lake until his retirement in 1999. During his ministry he was a member of the Junior/Senior High Conference Staff, was Co-Spiritual Director of two summer camps, served on the: Camps and Conference Commission, delegate to several Provincial Synods, The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Iowa, The Human Needs Commission, and The Board of Directors of the Episcopal Corporation. He was active in Cursillo and served as a team member on many Cursillo weekends. Community activities and organizations include the Jaycees in Centerville and Kiwanis in Spirit Lake. Larry also was a co-developer of a Community Service organization in Carroll, Iowa and served on the board. He served on a similar board in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed camping with his family throughout Iowa and loved fishing with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart. Larry along with his wife and children hunted agates and other interesting rocks and they also enjoyed tramping in the woods looking for morel mushrooms. Larry was also interested in genealogy and researched his and Janice’s families. Larry is survived by his wife Janice, Carroll, Iowa; daughters: Julie Diane (Michael) Madigan, Carroll, Iowa; Debra Jean (Stephen) Quandt, Carroll, Iowa; Linda Jayne (Marty) Nebel, Carroll, Iowa. Seven grandchildren, Angela Jean Kepner; Amy Diane (Chris) Loew; Melissa Anne Madigan (Benjamin); Stephanie Marie (Jeremy) David; Elizabeth Ella Christine Norton (Andrew); McKenna Jayne Leighton Quandt; Chloe Dean Den Herder. Eight great grandchildren: Jacey Janice Loew; Payton Joy Kepner; Michael David Wenck; Kenadee Christine Loew; Marah C. J. Wenck; McKallister Scott Wenck; Reece JulieAnn David, Avery Jean Kepner, and Delaney Joelie David. Sisters: Beverly (Max) VanBlaricome, Des Moines, Iowa; Cheryl (Jerry) Jansen, Tyler, Texas. Brothers and sisters in Law: Howard (Betty) DeVore, Eugene, Oregon; Ralph Carleous DeVore, Centerville, Iowa; sister-in-Law, Eleanor (Alyn Jay) Teater, Centerville, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Gatrel and mother, Lena Sebben Gatrel, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lewis and Genevieve DeVore; sisters-in laws, Jeanne Ellen DeVore, Eloise DeVore and nephew, Ralph Michael DeVore.
