Reese R. Abbe of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll. Mr. Abbe was 82.
Born on November 1, 1931 on his family’s farm near Battle Creek, Iowa, he was the son of Elmer and Lorene (Else) Abbe. He attended grade school in Ida Grove, and in the 8th grade was enrolled in Concordia Seminary Prep High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from there in 1949, and then matriculated at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska. While there he met Marion Woodburn of Topeka, Kansas. They were married in 1953, and were blessed with a son, Paul. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska, until Marion was tragically killed in an automobile accident in March of 1958.
Reese moved to Carroll in 1958, where he was employed by Singer Sewing Machine Company. He met Janice Prentice, who was working at Commercial Savings Bank, and they were married on June 22nd, 1959. It was about this time that Reese went to work as an agent for Mutual of Omaha, and continued to serve in that capacity for over fifty years. He was also a CFP certified financial planner and LUTC Fellow )LUTCF) awarded July, 1985
He and his wife and family were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll, where he served on the Board of Elders, (and many other boards), sang in the choir, and was active in adult Bible study. He was also a member of the Carroll Kiwanis Club, and in years past had been active with their annual pancake breakfasts. Reese enjoyed fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.
Reese is survived by his wife, Jan Abbe of Carroll, and three sons: Paul, and his wife Marie, of Raleigh, NC; Scott, and his wife Pam, of Chandler, AZ; and Steven and his wife Linda of Maywood, IL. Also surviving him are four grandchildren: Emelia Abbe of Charlottesville, VA, Julia Abbe of Chicago, IL, Katherin Abbe of Chandler, AZ, and James Abbe of Chandler, AZ; three brothers: Ross Abbe and his wife Barbara of Seattle, WA, Rolyn Abbe and his wife Kathy of Bellevue, WA, and Reynold Abbe and his wife Susan of Hansville, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Reese was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marion, and a son Clark Abbe.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be John Panning, flutist will be Judy Panning, and soloist will be Marv Toft. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
