Raymond G. Miller, age 96, of Carroll, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson of Holy Spirit Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 A.M. on Saturday until the time of service. Music for the service will be by Brenda Ashley. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
Born on October 10, 1915 at Remsen, Iowa, he was the son of Gerhardt and Anne (Tonsfeldt) Miller. Ray graduated from high school in Verdi, Minnesota in 1933. As a young man Ray traveled to California where he met his wife of 74 years Ruth. They were married on February 18, 1937 at Los Angeles, California. The couple moved to a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota from 1942 – 1954. Ray purchased a Ben Franklin Store in Morningside in Sioux City in 1954 and operated it until 1967 when he purchased a Coast to Coast Store in Mapleton and operated it until he retired in 1975. The couple then moved to Okoboji in 1979 and lived there until 1992 when they moved to Carroll. Ray belonged to several organizations throughout his business career. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, and fixing and inventing all sorts of gadgets. Ray and Ruth spent 27 years wintering in Arizona.
Surviving are his wife Ruth of Carroll; three daughters: Pat Schebler and her husband Pete of Davenport, Iowa, Judy Curry and her husband Lynn of Carroll, and Peggy and her husband John Bata of Urbandale, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren; a brother Orville Miller and his wife Beverly of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Eldon, Vernon, and Leon, and a daughter Sharon Lohse and her husband Bill.
