Ramona “Mona” Merrick, age 79, of Glidden and formerly of Carroll passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Lector for the Mass will be Alice Simons. Gift bearers will be Mona’s granddaughters. Casket bearers will be Mona’s grandsons and grandson-in-laws. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the Atlantic City Cemetery in Atlantic. Born on May 23, 1933 at Russell, Iowa she was the daughter of Merrill and Leona (Neptune) Baxter. Mona grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1951. Following high school she moved to Ames and worked for Iowa State University in Admissions. This is where she met her future husband A. Daniel Merrick who was Agriculture student. They were married on April 11, 1953 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Oak. The couple made their home in Red Oak and Winterset until moving to Atlantic in 1959. Mona worked at the Houghton State Bank in Red Oak and Atlantic Bottling while living in Atlantic. She also owned and operated the Damonique’s Antique Store in her home. Her husband passed away in 1993 and Mona moved to Carroll in 1994 to be closer to her family and she moved to Glidden in 2007. Mona operated Mona’s Cupcakes while living in Carroll and Glidden. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Mona loved children and spent a great deal of her spare time volunteering with children’s activities at the Rec Center and Holy Spirit School. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, reading, cooking, and baking cupcakes. Mona loved cultural events of all types and going to New York City to attend Broadway shows. Mona is survived by a son Steve Merrick of Glidden; two daughters Cyndi Hermansen and her husband Jim of Scranton, and Marci Hinners and her husband Jim of Ankeny; nine grandchildren: Joshua Merrick and his wife Kimberly of Omaha, Somer Merrick Plucker and her husband Matthew of Las Vegas, Nevada, Brett Merrick of Omaha, Nicholas O’Connor of Phoenix, Arizona, Jennifer Kramer and her husband Andy of Neola, Iowa, Lindsay Thooft and her husband Jeremy of Glidden, Danielle Hermansen of Scranton, Nathan Hinners of West Des Moines, and Adam Hinners of Kansas City, Missouri; five great grandchildren: Cassidy, Mason, Quinten, Daniel, and Kennedy; two sisters: Barbara Anderson of Santa Cruz, California and Janet Baxter of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; two brothers: Wendall Baxter of California and Gary Baxter of Washington State; a brother-in-law Donald Merrick and his wife Nancy of Clear Lake, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1993, her brother Ben Baxter, a daughter-in-law Joyce Merrick, three great grandsons: Dillan, Dayton, and Drake.
