Ralph Eugene Hoyt

Ralph Eugene Hoyt, age 91, of Scranton, IA, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson with his family present.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin Evers officiating. Music will be Cheryl Nailor and Karen Murphy. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Chad Schoon, Jeremiah Hoyt, Josh Hoyt, Josiah Hoyt, Caleb Hoyt, and Logan Hoyt. Honorary casket bearers will be Ralph’s grandchildren. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery with full military honors by the Iowa Army National Guard, Jefferson American Legion Post #11 and VFW Post #9599.

Visitation will be held at the Scranton United Methodist Church from 12:30 P.M. to 1:45 P.M. Saturday afternoon prior to the service.

Ralph was born August 29, 1933, in Greene County, IA, and was the son of William and Florence (Gotter) Hoyt. He attended rural school in Willow Township and graduated from the Scranton Consolidated School with the Class of 1952. After graduation, he served in the United States Army and during his tour of duty he served in Japan until he was honorably discharged. On April 10, 1954, Ralph was united in marriage to Shirley A. Said at the Scranton United Methodist Church by Rev. Blackman. To this union five children were born. Following his discharge, the couple farmed southwest of Scranton and continued to farm throughout their married life in Greene County. Ralph was a former member of the Providence Methodist Church in rural Scranton, the Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids and was a current member of the Scranton United Methodist Church. Ralph enjoyed reading, woodworking, and spending time with his family.

Ralph is survived by his daughter Deb Schoon (Kurt) of Scranton; four sons: Rick Hoyt (Sharon) of Scranton, Randy Hoyt (Sheryl) of Kalona, Roger Hoyt (Peggy) of Scranton, and Robert Hoyt (Emily) of Scranton; twenty-four grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brothers and sisters: Clara Haack of Davenport, Gaye Barr (Larry) of Scranton, Dale Hoyt (Linda) of Scranton, and Neal Hoyt (Caroline) of Scranton; brother-in-law Ron Carroll of Missouri; sister-in-law Beverly Hoyt of Jefferson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ralph is preceded in death by his wife Shirley A. Hoyt on December 19, 2018; his parents William and Florence Hoyt; his mother and father-in-law Clifford and Marjorie Said; daughter-in-law Kristine Hoyt; granddaughter Arminda Grace; five great-grandchildren: Samuel Charles Hoyt, Christopher Michael Hoyt, Noah Alexander Hoyt, Nile Eugene Hoyt, Rhett Lynn Schlabach; great-great-granddaughter Wrenly Rae Ayers; brother Glen Hoyt; sisters Arlene Carroll and Millie Said (Cliff); brother-in-law Jack Haack.
