Phyllis Schechinger

Phyllis Schechinger, age 91, of Carroll passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at her daughter’s home in Norfolk, Nebraska. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Friday where there will be a Rosary at 4:30 P.M. by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a Christian Wake service at 6:30 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of service. An honor guard will be formed by the Catholic Daughters at the church for the funeral Mass. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Casket bearers will be her 11 Grandsons, Bob Christiansen, Jason Eder, Troy Schechinger, Justin Weeces, Todd Schechinger, Ben Mundt, Gino Comito, Darrin Schechinger, Adam Smith, Johnny McAllister, and Austin Steffes. Honorary Casket bearers will be her 11 Granddaughters, Lorie Garland, Linda Waldman, Michelle Buchanan, Kristen Eder, Nicole Pazona, Heather Brown, Jessica McAllister, Sashya Clark, Sara Weeces, Rikki Schechinger, and Amy Smith. Born on May 23,1922, the youngest of nine children of Edward and Harriett (Rice) Hocking, on a farm ¼ mile South of Auburn, Iowa. She was the youngest of nine children. Phyllis went to Auburn School for all of her education. She was baptized by her Grandfather Lewis Rice into the Methodist Church in Grant City. He was a minister there, but after a tornado took the church in Grant City, the family went to the Presbyterian Church in Auburn. Phyllis was a 50 years plus member of Catholic Daughters, and helped to make rugs for her Church in Carroll. Many of her children and grand children have rugs displayed proudly in their homes. She also crocheted baby blankets for the new babies at the hospital. Her last count on baby blankets was 350, and still counting. All of her Grandchildren got an afghan for their high school graduation, and she was so proud of that fact because she was self taught at crocheting. All of her children also have an afghan that she made. Phyllis has been living with her daughter Jane for the past 5½ years, and was such a delight to have in her home. She was also very active with two bowling leagues, and dearly loved to bowl, she bowled in a league in Norfolk with her daughter Jane until she was ninety. She always prided herself in having a very beautiful flower garden wherever she lived. She touched the hearts of many people with her kind and loving heart. She taught her children and grand children to work hard and play even harder. Phyllis attended Bible School every summer in Auburn, during grade school. When she graduated in 1940, she moved to Carroll to work in a cafe, where she met Leonard Schechinger. They were married on October 7, 1941. Phyllis converted to the Catholic faith on September 14, 1941. She is survived by her children: Joyce (John Ditz), Dean (Marlene), Duane (Cathy), Jane (Gary Christiansen), Jolene, Dale (Cindy), Julie (Dana Accola), Jill (Rick Smith), Janell, and Jean (Dan Scott). She’s also survived by 22 grandchildren and 6 step grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Sarg Schechinger and his wife Mary Jo; two sisters-in-law Betty Hoehl and Helen Heiman; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings. Also her husband Leonard in June of 1984, her daughter Janice in October of 2000, and her son Dennis in October of 2013.
