Phyllis L. Petersen, age 83, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev. Brian Camara of the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday evening at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. The casket will be moved to First Presbyterian Church at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin. Casket bearers will be Phyllis’ sons: Jeff Petersen, Jim Petersen, and Jon Petersen, son-in-law: Paul Ladensack, grandsons: Chris Petersen, Tyler Petersen, Matt Petersen, Adam Schlichte, and grandson-in-law Will Wears. Born on September 10, 1931 in Red Oak, IA, she was the daughter of Ancil and Lenore (Frohn) Vaughn. She grew up in Red Oak and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1949. Following high school, she attended the Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha. Phyllis worked for Western Electric in Omaha for two years and then moved to Red Oak where she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Phyllis was married to Dale Petersen on March 30, 1952 at the First Christian Church in Red Oak. The couple lived in Red Oak and Council Bluffs before moving to Carroll in 1953. Phyllis was a homemaker and later worked as a receptionist for Dr’s John Martin and Frank Greteman. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Carroll where she served as church secretary, taught Sunday school, and was a Deacon. Phyllis was active as a leader in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, making Christmas ornaments, tending to her flowers, writing letters, playing the organ, playing slot machines and video poker, but most of all spending time with her family.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Dale of 63 years; three daughters: Julie DeWitt of Des Moines, Jenni Schlichte and her husband Richard of Carroll, and Jane Ladensack and her husband Paul of Phoenix, AZ; three sons: Jeff Petersen and his wife Francia of Boston, MA, Jim Petersen and his wife Michelle of St. Louis, MO, and Jon Petersen of Omaha; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law Duane Petersen and his wife Fumiko of Olympia, WA, and Jerry Petersen and his wife Linda of Audubon; and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Robert, Eugene, and Duane and a son-in-law Keith DeWitt.
