Phyllis A. Bender

Phyllis Ann Bender, age 81, of Glidden passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Rev. Brian Camara officiating. Organist for the service will be Marlys Conner. Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on December 18, 1933 in Carroll County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Wendall and Leah (Dankel) Greene. She grew up in Glidden and graduated from Glidden High School in 1952. She worked for the McNaught and Prill Grocery Stores in Glidden and later for Greene's Market. She also worked for Glidden Coop Creamery. Phyllis was married to Leland Bender on August 7, 1955 at the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden by Rev. Becker. In 1957, Phyllis moved to Tacoma, Washington while Leland was serving in the US Army and got a job working for the American Red Cross as a bookkeeper. The couple moved back to Glidden in May of 1959 and Phyllis went back to work at Greene's Market and sold Avon for many years. She also worked for the Glidden Graphic and Merle Norman Cosmetics in Carroll. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden and Entre Nous. Phyllis cherished being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Phyllis is survived by her husband Leland of 60 years of Glidden; a daughter Brenda Rickabaugh and her husband Jeffrey of Des Moines; two grandsons: Benjamin and Joseph Tomlin both of Des Moines; a sister-in-law Delores Breidert of Lake City; and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Richard Greene.
