Paul A. Hike Sr.

Paul A. Hike Sr., age 83, of Boone and formerly of  Scranton passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Accura Healthcare of Ogden after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Pastor Jessten Heimer of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone officiating.  Casket bearers will be Michael Morlan, Justin Hike, William Hike, Josh Hike, Tony Hike, Seth Beyer, Rich O’Dell, Marc Landreth, Chad Baker, and Terry Richardson.  Burial in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the Glidden American Legion.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.  Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. on Thursday prior to the service.

Paul was born on June 3, 1940 in Carroll, IA, and was the son of Kenneth and Frieda (Janssen) Hike.  He was affectionately known by many as Bud. He lived on a farm east of Carroll until age 6 when his family moved to Lytton.  The family later moved to Nemaha where he attended high school. Following school he worked as a farm hand before he enlisted in the United States Army in 1957. He served in Germany for three years. After his military service he returned to the U.S. and worked for Conoco Gas Station in Carroll as a mechanic.  Paul was married to Charlotte Heisterkamp on August 12, 1961 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple moved to Wall Lake in 1962 and Paul worked as a farm hand. They lived in Lake View, Carroll, and Ralston before moving to Scranton in 1987.  In 2016 he moved to Boone to be near family. Paul enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family and grandchildren.  In his later years, he took up daily walks on the Boone trail where he created new friendships.

Paul is survived by a daughter Laura (Jason) Brooker of Boone; two sons Paul (Janel) Hike Jr of San Antonio, TX, and Curt Hike of Ralston; a daughter-in-law Barbara Hike of Des Moines; thirteen grandchildren; thirty seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marilyn Winkel of Ft. Dodge and Patricia Leytham of Boone; a sister-in-law Monica Hike of Marion; and a brother-in-law Richard Kroeger; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte in 1999; a son Keith Hike in 2018; his parents Kenneth and Frieda Hike; his father and mother-in-law Edgar and Dorothy Heisterkamp; brother Ray Hike; two sisters: Phyllis Dion and Jo Ann Kroeger.
