Paul Gladfelder

Paul K. Gladfelder, 92, passed away on March 21, 2012, in Carroll, Iowa. Born on October 12, 1919 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Harry and Clara (Brehm) Gladfelder, and was the youngest of four children. The family lived in Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines, where he was graduated from Roosevelt High School. He attended Drake University but his college education was cut short by World War II. He joined the US Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia when he met Chrystal, a beautiful southern belle from Edenton, North Carolina. They were married almost 65 years until her death in 2007. After the war ended, he worked for various newspapers in Grand Rapids, MI, Mankato, MN, and Tallahassee, FL, retired from a successful career with Diamond/Syntex Laboratories, then went back to “fun” work again with a newspaper in Salisbury, MD. He always said he would choose work over vacation or retirement any time. When they finally retired once and for all, it was in Carroll. He was an avid news junkie and was active in politics, a seed perhaps germinated in his senior year in high school where, as editor of the school newspaper, he invited Ronald “Dutch” Reagan to give a presentation lecture to his speech and journalism class. He called Mr. Reagan at radio station WHO and was then honored to chauffeur him to and from the school. Survivors include son Paul G. Gladfelder and his wife Virginia of San Diego, CA, daughter Susan Gantz and her husband, Evan, of Santa Barbara, CA, son Dean A. Gladfelder and his wife, Betty, of Carroll, IA, and two granddaughters, Rachel and Sophie Gantz. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Evans of the McFarland Clinic and the staff of the Carroll Health Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Nancy Davis and musical selections will be “How Great Thou Art”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, and “Amazing Grace”. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
