He then attended Conception Seminary (Conception, MO) and Divine Word Seminary (Epworth, IA) before graduating from Carroll HS in 1948. Orv served in the Navy from 1951-1954. During this time he met his future wife, Marion F. DiTullio in Boston, MA. He was active with the Carroll Board of Realtors, having served as president. He was a member of Holy Spirit parish in Carroll. Orv had a strong faith in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and he often said in his later years as a resident of the Carroll Health Center that his goal was to get at least one person to smile each day.
