Norbert John Berning age 92 of Lake View, Iowa and formerly of the Arcadia/Breda area died at the Blackhawk Life Care Center in Lake View on Sunday August 9, 2009 where he has made his home for the past 2 years.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Thursday Aug 13, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake, Iowa with Father John McGuirk as celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5PM on Wed where there will be a Christian Wake Service by the Parish at 6PM.The casket will be taken to the Church at 8:30AM on Thursday for viewing until time of the service. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Breda American Legion. Casket Bearers will be Jake Schwaller, Grant Sholty, Jamie A. Renze, Matt Scheffler, Cory Weber and Haylie Scheffler.
Norbert had farmed between Arcadia and Breda and also was a track supervisor for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 25 year retiring in 1973.He was the son of William and Anna Marie (Jasper) Berning. He was born on April 16, 1917 at Breda Iowa. As a young boy he attended rural school and also St. Bernard’s school in Breda. He was married to Marjorie Miller on September 1, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carroll with Msgr. P.J. Lynch as celebrant. Norbert was a veteran of WWII having served with the Army Air Force from 1941 to 1946. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching Cubs Baseball, cooking, gardening, canning tomatoes and cucumbers. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake and the American Legion at Breda, Iowa.
Surviving are his wife Marjorie of Lake View, and two sons Robert Berning of Carlisle, Iowa and Keith Berning of Lake View, Iowa and one daughter Sandy Weber and her husband Mark of Early, Iowa, 6 grandchildren: Amy Scheffler, Cari Sholty, Jamie Renze, Jake Schwaller, Molly Vondrak and Cory Weber, and twelve great grandchildren, a brother William Berning Jr. and his wife Betty of Ft. Dodge, Iowa and two sisters Mary Ann Janning and her husband John of Carroll, Iowa and a sister Agnes Tigges of Des Moines, Iowa, three sisters in law, Marian Berning of Breda, Iowa, Viola Berning of Carroll and Dorthea Berning of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers Albert, Francis, Laverne, Wilfred, Lawrence and a sister Leota Reiff.
