Neil A. Hight

Neil A. Hight, age 87, of Scranton passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Swan Place in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Scranton with Pastor Joyce Webb officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Carla Wilcox. Casket bearers will be Joey Schon, Marlin Hein, Evan Heck, Larry Winkelbauer, Melanie Horel, Adrian Rathgerber and Nancy Moravec. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery with military honors by the Iowa National Guard. Born on January 16, 1927 in Hartington, Nebraska, he was the son of Jessie Leo and Lula Mae (Russell) Hight. He attended country school in Cedar County, Nebraska as a boy and went to work as a farm hand. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 and served for two years during WW II. He was married to Betty Joy Brown on March 28, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Glidden. The couple farmed south of Glidden and in Lake City before moving south west of Scranton in 1954. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Scranton. He served on the Scranton Elevator Board for several years and he was a volunteer umpire for the Scranton Little League. Neil loved farming and it was his passion. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Neil enjoyed playing cards, visiting, and he and Betty went on many trips over the years. Neil is survived by a son Daniel Hight of Omaha, NE; two daughters: Janet Hendricks and her husband Dennis of Bagley, IA, and Rebecca Hight – Moravec and her husband Ron of Lincoln, NE; six granddaughters: Heather, Hope, Denise, Morgan, Melanie, and Nancy ; several great grandchildren including Aiden and Reid Horel; a sister Darie Heck of Littleton, CO; two brothers: Merle “Curly” Hight and his wife Sylvia of Denison, IA, and Al Hight and his wife Miriam of Lake City, IA; and many nieces and nephews ; and many dear friends. Neil’s family would like to thank the staff of Swan Place and Gentiva Hospice for their kind and loving care he recieved during his stay with them. Neil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty in March of 2014, five sisters: Edna Milligan, Jessie Heck, Vera Anderson, Evolyn Rathgeber, and Leola Erickson, and two brothers: Roy and Russ Hight.
