Naomi Thelma Golay, age 91, of Coon Rapids passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the home of her daughter Teresa Ankenbauer in Coon Rapids surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids with John Kult officiating. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes. Casket bearers will be Naomi’s grandsons. Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on August 16, 1925 on her family’s farm south of Coon Rapids, Naomi was the daughter of Harry Sr. and Grace (Drake) Olesen. Naomi grew up on the family farm and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1942. Following graduation, Naomi worked at a dress shop in Coon Rapids where she learned to be a seamstress. She also worked at her uncle’s Motel in Coon Rapids and with sister Ramona in Des Moines. She was married to Max Mozena in 1946 and to this union was born two children: Ronnie Earl and Steven Dale. The couple lived in Dana, IA, and later divorced. Naomi was later married to Ernest Wilbur Golay in 1954 and to this union was born five children: Edward, Kenneth, Joni, Teresa, and Douglas. The couple lived south of Coon Rapids where Ernie worked as a carpenter and Naomi was a homemaker. Ernie passed away on September 1, 1967 in an automobile accident. Following Ernie’s death, Naomi purchased a farm north of Coon Rapids where the family raised livestock. In 1974 she sold the farm, purchased her home in Coon Rapids and worked as a cook at Thomas Rest Haven until her retirement in 1988. In retirement, she did volunteer work with RSVP and Speak Up at the Coon Rapids School. Naomi has made her home with her daughter Teresa for the past six years. She was a member of the Needle Club and was very active in the First Christian Church of Coon Rapids. Naomi enjoyed playing Bingo, quilting, playing cards, music; especially Elvis, gardening, and sharing stories and laughing with her family, grand-children, and great-grandchildren. Naomi is survived by her six children: her daughter Teresa Ankenbauer (Bob) of Coon Rapids; five sons: Ronnie Mozena of Rippey, Steve Golay (Brenda) of Perry, Ed Golay (Cindy) of Coon Rapids, Ken Golay (special friend Donna Drake) of Lake Panorma, and Doug Golay (Angela) of Coon Rapids; twelve grandchildren; Kim Mozena of Webster City, Melissa Mozena of Des Moines, Eric Golay of Duluth, MN, Rachel Sperry (Kurt) of Norwalk, Bryan Golay (Michaeleen) of Clarksville, IA, Katie Golay of Norwalk, Andy Golay (Halle) of Jefferson, Ryan Ankenbauer of Monona, WI, Josh Ankenbauer of Coon Rapids, Amber Ankenbauer of Adel, Kyle Golay of West Des Moines, and Alex Golay of Waukee; twelve great-grandchildren: Emma, Elijah, Hannah, Brandie, Brianna, Jonah, Grace, Sophia, Harrison, Landon, Nolan, and Laney; three sisters: Eunice Herron of Coon Rapids, Claribel Sievers (Merlin) of Coon Rapids, and Maryanne Olson of Vail; a brother Max Olesen (Karen) of Coon Rapids; her in-laws: Joan (Olesen) Strautmanof Carroll, Kay Yeager (Jerry) of Coon Rapids, Marilyn Carpenter of Coon Rapids, Millie Golay of Coon Rapids, Jim Golay of La Mirada, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ernest Golay; her daughter Joni Penfold; a granddaughter Lacey Golay-Redling; six brothers: Harry Jr., Howard, Earl, Bill, Bob, and Jens; and a sister Ramona Richardson.
